Policy Framework for Design in Enterprise in Ireland.
Five decades after the publication of the Design in Ireland report, colloquially known as the Scandinavian Report, Ireland has a new Policy Framework for Design in Enterprise in Ireland commissioned as part of the year of Irish Design 2015 (ID2015).
Dr Con Kennedy was commissioned by the Design and Crafts Council of Ireland and the Department of Jobs, Enterprise and Jobs to research design enterprises in Ireland. The scope of the Profile of Business in the Traditional Design Sectors report included investigating the following sectors: Architecture, Animation, Craft, Digital Design, Communication Design, and Product/Industrial Design.
The key findings of this report are that there are over 3,900 design enterprises in Ireland, over one-third of them are based in Dublin, 20% are start-up enterprises, and 144 design education programmes are available in third-level institutions and 160 in further education institutions.
The Profile of Business in the Traditional Design Sectors report was one of three studies undertaken by independent researchers. The Department of Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation used the conclusions of the studies to inform the Policy Framework for Design in Enterprise in Ireland, the first Government policy on design since the Scandinavian Report. This policy document was published in January 2016.
